20dB Soundstudios was established at 2007 at this silent narrow lane at the backyards of residential Chennai. Yes, we agree it’s a bit rustic. But who said life is all fair? We excelled with what we have and we are good at what we do, at least most of the time. At 20dB we have managed to amass a palette of Boutique and Class A Analogue gears which we promise will take care of your job. We have cultivated a “Zero tolerance policy” to “Mediocrity “at all times, be it at a good day or a bad one.
“20dB Black” Mastering Suite is our mix room. “Black “carries our politics. It represents our keen and empathetical eye to the not so fortunate ones, our compassion to the under-privileged. There is even some sort of apathy we have accumulated towards Glit, Glamour, The Shimmer & Shine to an extend where some of our good friends have suggested we better get sorted. We wishfully chose the name “Black”. The one which is tolerant and is always in trend. Certain things don’t change with time, isn’t it? “Black “is a Hybrid Mixing & Mastering Room equipped with some really expensive gears and most importantly handled by people who really don’t need them to make anything sound good. Therefore, technically the space is over equipped with abundance for our clients.

20dB houses Balu Thankachan who is an award-winning Mixing & Mastering Engineer.
Starting his professional career at a very young age, this silent but brilliant artisan has mixed
& mastered around 4000 songs till date. Many of them chart busters and considered
“benchmark sound” in the Indian music industry. He is also equipped with all the right gears
and attitude; his workstation is one of the best “sweet spots” in the country. Asserting
excessive pride on ourselves doesn’t come naturally to us, but you see, we need to call an
Ace, “an Ace”!

20dB Sound Studios. He has conducted & overseen some of the biggest hits over a span of
last 15 years. An ardent reader with a voracious appetite for Creativity and good music he
spear-heads this institution and have mentored some of the leading Audio Engineers in the
country under 20dB’s Internship programmes.

Hip Hop and New age music, his craft is considered seamless and keeping everyone under

This debate of Analogue Vs Digital Audio Ecosystems, Stereo Vs Immersive Audio, Perceived Audio Vs Absolute Audio etc will never end. Such discourses are catalysts for improvement. With emerging Digital innovations in Audio Engineering & Music Production there are notions notifying professional sound-studios maybe a thing of the past. We don’t care! We love our vast collections of Microphones, Old massive vacuum tubes to the latest digital hybrids too. We will hold on to our Pultecs, Class A preamps, Summing Mixers and rest of our sorties until end of times. We do believe in Auto calibrating monitors, however for now we love to vouch for that tad pinch of woody reverb or say the airy brightness that our recording room translates beautifully.

Covid 19 is making all its moves and withering such pandemics are not easy! We take it as an opportunity to learn new things about life, sustenance and finding ways to contribute. 20dB Internship programmes are offered purely at our will and discretion to train and create professional audio engineers who could excel at work creatively with ease and precision. This programme which goes back to a practice we had undertaken for more than a decade from now has cultivated some of the leading audio engineers in the country. We are proud of them as well as the other set of guys who realized this is not their cup of tea and went on pursuing others things in life.
